Xiaoyang Yu’s delicately renders scenes of daily life in his native China on the canvas. The paintings of this self-taught artist now living in Montreal are charming in their simplicity - an asceticism with which the artist sees his subject, the naivety of the sketch, and the purity of the shades. Yu is especially sensitive to the diverse nuances of stone, sky and water.
He applies his palette with experienced finesse, bringing out the clarity of ambient light, the limpid translucence of water, a diaphanous silhouette or garment, the iridescence of vegetation.
Xiaoyang Yu has brought the muggy mildness of scenes of Asian monsoon season with him to the West.
